Could George Russell be the next Mercedes` Lewis Hamilton?

George Russell goes over Lewis Hamilton

Lewis Hamilton has been the top drawer in Formula One’s history, having tied with the legendary Michael Schumacher for the record highest world championships. He has become the man to beat as far as Formula One is concerned, however for once he faced a threat in the form of George Russell in the previous 2022 edition of the race series.

George Russell scored a breakthrough season with the Silver Arrows, where he not only took his maiden F1 win but also beat Hamilton over the course of the season. Over the course of the 2022 F1 season, it was George Russell who was the perfect reinforcement for the team, and brought a lot of positive energy. After being the substitute driver for three years, Mercedes fielded George Russell into their 2022 lineup, which would mark his first season against the seven-time world champion. Russell delivered a stellar performance, outshining the legend just in his first season.

George Russell alluded that his victory at the 2022 São Paulo GP was more important than beating Lewis Hamilton for points that year. While the 2022 edition was a difficult season for Mercedes, Russell claimed the only Mercedes victory in that season and defeated Hamilton with 275 points, 35 more than Hamilton. Russell would also finish in fourth place, with Hamilton in sixth place. Russell thus became the only third team-mate in Hamilton’s F1 career to beat the seven-time world champion in the overall standings.

George Russell also managed to get eight pole positions in that season, and he emphasizes that he wants more points. Being disappointed with how the season turned out, many thanks to the eight world constructors` championships that Mercedes had bagged prior to the season and also seven world championships, Russell felt that they could have done a lot better as a team.

Below is the number of points earned by Lewis Hamilton and George Russell:

São Paulo was the only place where Mercedes was clearly the fastest team over a rare distance, a direct indication of the failure of the W13 to be a title contender. Russell wants to take advantage of the W14, in order to claim his first driver’s world championship and the eighth for Mercedes.

Johnny Herbert argued that Lewis Hamilton will return to normalcy in the 2023 edition of the race series, knowing very well that there’s now the genesis of the Russell era. Johnny further alluded that Hamilton knowing that the car wasn’t great, it would then mean that Hamilton wasn’t in the right state of mind, as he could envision his loss even while it was miles away. Herbert believes that Hamilton is now fully aware of the challenge that Russell brings on his path to claiming his record-eighth world championship, and will use the hot pressure to help him sail through to the championship glory. A number of sporting legends believe that as much as the seven-time world champion’s career is coming to an end, Russell’s Chapter is being opened to take over from that of Hamilton.
